Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Treatments

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the ongoing inability to get an erection or maintain one firm enough for sexual intercourse. While occasional erection problems are normal, especially during stress or fatigue, erectile dysfunction ED becomes a medical concern when it happens regularly and begins affecting your confidence, your relationships, and your overall health.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, ED affects an estimated 30 million men in the United States. It becomes more common with age but can occur at any stage of life. The good news: erectile dysfunction is highly treatable, and identifying the underlying problem is the first step toward restoring sexual function.

Common Causes of ED

Male sexual dysfunction is rarely caused by a single factor. Most cases involve a combination of physical conditions and psychological factors that disrupt blood flow, nerve signals, hormones, or emotional health.

Physical Causes

Cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure are among the leading risk factors. When blood vessels narrow or harden, they reduce blood flow throughout the body, including penile blood flow, making it difficult to get an erection. High cholesterol and high blood sugar accelerate this vascular disease over time, which is why men with heart disease or diabetes are significantly more likely to develop ED.

Low testosterone is another major contributor. The endocrine system naturally reduces testosterone production as men age, and when levels drop too low, libido, arousal, and erectile function all suffer. Excess weight compounds this problem by further disrupting hormone balance and reducing blood flow.

Nerve damage from conditions like multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, pelvic surgery, or radiation therapy can interrupt the signals between the nervous system and the erectile tissue. Certain prescription drugs, including some blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and drugs used to treat chest pain (nitrate drugs), can also reduce blood flow or interfere with erection function as a side effect.

Lifestyle factors matter as well. Quitting smoking, reducing too much alcohol, avoiding illicit drugs, and working to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight can all meaningfully improve vascular health and sexual health.

Psychological Causes

Performance anxiety, depression, stress, and relationship conflict can all trigger or worsen ED symptoms. In psychogenic ED, the physical structures may be intact, but mental health barriers prevent the brain from initiating arousal. Depression is especially impactful because it affects both desire and the brain chemistry involved in sexual stimulation, and many antidepressants carry ED as a side effect.

ED Treatments at Las Vegas Medical Institute

We take a personalized approach to every patient. After a thorough evaluation, including medical history, sexual history, physical exam, and blood tests when appropriate, we recommend the treatment or combination of treatments most likely to deliver lasting results.

ApexRF by InMode , NEW TREATMENT

Our newest and most advanced ED treatment option.

ApexRF uses radiofrequency energy and electromagnetic stimulation to improve erectile function at a structural level. It targets the collagen fibers within the erection chambers (corpora cavernosa and tunica albuginea), stimulating tissue remodeling and encouraging the growth of new blood vessels to increase blood flow.

Sessions last about 15 minutes with zero pain and zero downtime. Most patients complete six sessions. Best for men with mild to moderate ED, particularly those who haven't responded to oral medications or prefer a drug-free approach.

GAINSWave® Therapy

GAINSWave uses low-intensity shockwave therapy to break up micro-plaque in blood vessels, stimulate new vessel growth, and increase blood flow to the penis. Each session takes about 20 minutes with no anesthesia, no medication, and no downtime.

Protocols typically involve 6–12 sessions. Best for men with vascular ED who want to reduce dependence on oral medicines like sildenafil citrate (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis), or for men looking to enhance sexual function even without a formal diagnosis.

The P-Shot® (Priapus Shot)

The P-Shot uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from your own blood to stimulate tissue repair in the penis. After a simple blood draw, the PRP is concentrated and injected into targeted areas using a very fine needle. Growth factors promote new cell development, improve blood vessel formation, and enhance nerve sensitivity.

The procedure takes about 30 minutes with topical numbing. No downtime. Results develop over several weeks. Best for men seeking natural tissue regeneration and enhanced sensitivity, works well alone or combined with GAINSWave or ApexRF.

Low Testosterone Treatment

Low testosterone affects nearly 40% of men over 45 and is one of the most underdiagnosed causes of ED. Testosterone therapy, including testosterone replacement therapy and bioidentical hormone optimization, can restore libido, energy, and erectile function when hormone levels are the underlying health condition.

Treatment begins with comprehensive blood tests and ongoing monitoring. Many men notice improvements in energy and sex life within the first few weeks. Best when combined with other ED treatments for a complete approach.

Sexual Wellness Program

Our Sexual Wellness Program combines multiple treatments into one coordinated plan, such as pairing ApexRF with GAINSWave and testosterone replacement, or combining the P-Shot with lifestyle guidance. Best for men with multiple contributing factors who want a comprehensive strategy for long-term sexual health.

How We Compare to Other ED Treatment Options

Many men come to us after trying other medical treatments with limited success. Here's how our approach compares:

Oral medications (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra) temporarily increase blood flow but must be taken before every encounter and can cause side effects including low blood pressure and headaches. They cannot be used alongside nitrate drugs prescribed to treat chest pain. Our treatments target the underlying problem for lasting improvement without daily prescription medication.

Penile injections (self injection therapy) deliver medication directly into the erectile tissue to produce an erection. While effective, they require a very fine needle before each use and carry risks including prolonged erection and minor bleeding. Our non-invasive options achieve results without needles or injections at the point of use.

Vacuum erection device (penis pump) uses suction to draw blood into the penis. It works mechanically but can feel unnatural and interrupt spontaneity. Our treatments restore the body's own ability to respond to sexual stimulation.

Penile implants are a surgical option typically reserved for severe cases when other treatments have failed. Our approach focuses on non-surgical alternatives first.

Over the counter drugs and supplements vary widely in quality and effectiveness, and safety is not always guaranteed.

At Las Vegas Medical Institute, every treatment we offer is non-invasive, evidence-based, and designed to restore natural function, not just manage symptoms.
